Biography by Louise Morton

CLAIRE GERARDINE AND FAMILY

Born: April 21, 1916
Departed February 4, 2003
Spouse: Jack Belbeck
Departed October 28, 1963

Claire was born April 21, 1916 in Ford City (Windsor, ON) to parents
Anoncéade and Wilfrid, she was the eldest in a family of 12 children.
She spent her formative years in Sturgeon Falls, Saskatchewan, Charlton and
Haileybury. Due to frequent moves, she also attended boarding school in
Sturgeon Falls. Since mom was the eldest in the family, she was called upon to
help with her younger brothers and sisters, which she did willingly. Mom much
preferred her household duties and avoided (as much as possible) any outdoor
farm chores.

Mom's younger sisters and brothers spoke very kindly of her goodness and
generosity towards them. At 16 she went to work as a housekeeper in
Kirkland Lake for $15.00 per month (during the Great Depression). She later
sent for Anita. As there was not much money in those days, they carefully
saved from their earnings in order to buy Christmas presents for their younger
brothers and sisters. During this period Mom bought a chesterfield set for the
family making monthly payments.

During the second world war years she lived in Windsor, ON with Anita. She
had 3 brothers in the Air Force; when they were stationed in southern Ontario
they would spend their leave with Claire and Anita. When Jacques and Guy
were stationed overseas, she would write often and send parcels of chocolate
bars, peanuts and cigarettes.

Claire worked for Laura Secords (chocolates) during and immediately after the
war years. She moved to Sudbury in 1947 and became a manager for a Laura
Secord store and in those days this was quite an accomplishment for a woman.
Mom also had a great sense of style often sewing her own clothes and hats as
can be seen in the photos from those years.

She married Jack Belbeck in Haileybury August 4, 1948 and her daughters soon
followed Jacqueline in 1949 and Suzanne in 1951.

Claire and Jack lived in Sudbury and then bought a piece of property in Val
Caron and built their home together. They then moved back to Haileybury in
either 1957 or 1958 as Jack was a millwright with Inco and a major strike was
in the works. They bought Mémère and Pépère Vannier's store and continued
to work and live in the attached house until Jack's death.

Mom went back to school in Timmins for 10 months (after Jack's death) to get
a diploma. She then returned to Haileybury and worked at the Haileybury
Hospital in admitting until her retirement.
In her later years Mom loved gardening (vegetables and flowers), as well as
reading, cooking and baking.
Very high on her list was her love of family and her grandchildren (3 beloved
granddaughters and one beloved grandson). She loved visiting her siblings in
Florida and Arizona and also loved the many annual sister reunions. One of
Mom's most cherished trips was when she went to Hawaii with Barb, Anita,
Ernestine and survived one of their worst hurricanes.

Mom spent her final years in Kamloops with Suzanne and family where she
passed away at 87 years old.

Claire's many qualities can be summed up by her love of all her family, her
goodness, generosity and especially her strength of character in facing her life's
many challenges.

CHILDREN: Jacqueline and Suzanne.
