Obituary

Corinne Olive Vanier Keenan (1933 - 2017)

Born in Madawaska, Maine, on March 11, 1933 and passed away on December 29, 2017 at age 84, in Sacramento County, CA, where she had resided for 50 years. She married Terrance D. Kennan, 22 Aug 1964, in San Bernardino County.

She was the devoted wife to Terrance for over 53 years, and beloved mother to son Jeffrey Keenan, his wife Jamie, of El Dorado, CA, and daughter Lori Gilbert and her husband Bradley, of Folsom, CA. She was a doting grandmother to four granddaughters Tylar, Morgan, and Madalyn Keenan, Evalyn Tostado, and two grandsons Ari and Jayden Gilbert. She is also survived by two siblings, John Vanier and Eva Harmon, in Caribou, Maine.

Preceded in death by parents Emile and Eva Vanier, step-mother Irene, brothers Armand, Eldon, Paul, and sister Blanche. She will be greatly missed by many nieces, nephews, friends, and neighbors.

Corinne graduated salutatorian of her class at Madawaska High School, and achieved the highest ranks in Girl Scouts. After a 3-year training program on scholarship, she became a registered nurse and spent several years caring for her step-mother while working in a hospital in Portland, ME. She then joined the Air Force as a First Lieutenant during the 1960’s, stationed in Morocco, and several other bases around the United States.

She was proud of receiving her Mach pin for flying mach 1 in back of an F-100, and helping women nurses achieve equality rights with men in the military regarding housing and respect from doctors. She was a Captain when she was honorably discharged in 1966, two years after marrying. She continued her nursing career until 1974 when she suffered a heart attack and had her first of three open heart bypass surgeries.

The family was blessed to have her as a homemaker as the children were growing up. She enjoyed handicrafts, baking, and was an avid reader. Cherished memories of her include her kind heart, giving spirit, and making people feel special from her compassion and caring.

A memorial service will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Carmichael, CA on Jan. 12, 2018 at 2:00 pm. The family requests in lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the American Heart Association, or your favorite charity.
