Biography:

Jean Claude Armand Vannier was born on 4 July 1926. He was
the fifth of six boys and the seventh of eleven children. Like many of his siblings, he
was born and baptised in Sturgeon Falls ON.
Jean Claude joined the RCAF when he turned 17, as a boy. He was following in the
footsteps of his three older brothers who were also in the RCAF. He was too young
for operational duties and, as the war in Europe was winding down, he was demobilised
in December 1944. He promptly re-signed with the Royal Canadian Artillery and was
being trained for the Pacific theatre; the end of the Pacific war in September 1945
brought his military career to a close.
After demobilisation in October 1945, he moved back to Haileybury and enrolled in
the Haileybury School Of Mines. His buddy and room-mate was Jack Charron. During
Lent of 1946, while passing time with Jack at Buster's, he met Beatrice Desrosiers, a
pretty 19 year old girl from Diamond Township (near New Liskeard) and fell in love.
They were married on 12 October 1946 and provided the world with six little
Vannier's, three girls and three boys.
After graduating from the School of Mines, Jean Claude worked in Noranda and
Sudbury. In 1958 he hung up his miner's pick & shovel and took up the insurance
business. He eventually opened his own Office in Earlton and was fairly successful. I
remember when he won a trip to California and he and mom went to Palm Springs and
rented a Ford Mustang: they had just come out then; how cool.
In 1964, while in Earlton, he suffered a major heart attack. This was before the days
of the national health system and this event had a profound effect on the whole
family.
Jean Claude died of heart disease in August 1969. However; before leaving us he
participated in ground breaking medical experiments and trials. He had triple coronary
artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery in June 1968 in Montreal. Dr Pierre Grondin (1st
heart transplant in Canada) carried out the surgery; this was done one year after the
first CABG surgery was carried out in North America in May 1967 in Cincinnati. In
1969, he had an experimental pacemaker implanted.
Jean Claude was a kind and generous family man. Françoise recalls a conversation
with Claire and Claudette many years after he passed away and each one of the sisters
made this statement "I was Dad's favorite daughter". It takes a special person to
have all three of them think that each one was THE number one daughter. That was
our dad.
